HI EVERYONE!!
im here to post some background information abt YONG TAU FOO. since there is a sudden craze of it recently in 09s6f.
-HISTORY OF YTF-
In Malaysia, the Ampang region of Kuala Lumpur is particularly famous for this dish. It is ubiquitous in Singapore food courts, too. Essentially the dish originated in the early 1960s in a restaurant called "Chew Kuan" as tofu stuffed with a meat paste of fish and pork, thereby earning the dish its name "Yong Tau Foo," which means "stuffed bean curd." Since then all variety of vegetables and even fried fritters have been similarly stuffed, and the name Yong Tau Foo has thus been used liberally to apply to foods prepared in this manner.

Make sure the school holiday gives pupils a real break
ya...xiang3 de2 me13.....
I WAS surprised to see a lot of secondary and primary school students going back to school during the week of their first-term school holidays. There were others who met up to do projects either at fast food joints or in their homes.
The reasons for going back to school during the holidays included co-curricular activities or some academic classes.
I find this very unfair to the students who are all seeking a break from nearly 10 weeks of school. (In a lot of secondary schools, the hours are almost like working hours, where they clock in days that last from 8am to 5pm or 6pm.)
What is the point of giving them a school break of a week when in that time, their break is being interrupted by some kind of school curriculum? Don't our children deserve a clean break from school?
Adults have annual leave that is our legal right. Don't our children have the same right then to be on holiday during their school break?
The education set-up, especially in secondary school and beyond, is already very stressful to the children and just like adults, they too need to 'go on leave'.
It is only during the school holidays that our children can enjoy the luxury of sleeping in longer, spending time with family members, especially with the older folk, and enjoying friendships in the neighbourhood.
There are a whole lot of other things that our children need to learn to enjoy, work at and be responsible for, other than just the school curriculum and activities. The school holidays are meant for them to do things that are essential for a holistic lifestyle.
I am sure the Ministry of Education (MOE) doesn't encourage schools to call back their students during the holidays, so maybe the ministry can help define for us the objective of school breaks.
Perhaps the objectives have changed and parents need to know about them. If there is a certain agenda to be achieved by schools during the holidays, then I would suggest that either MOE shorten the breaks or get schools to "pay back" to their students the time taken away from them when they are required to go back to school for whatever reasons.

A Spur to hire local drivers
SBS Transit and SMRT have received a boost in their efforts to hire local bus drivers, with the Government set to pay up to $3.2 million to fund the training of new hires over the next two years. Ninety per cent of the operators' training costs for new drivers who are Singaporeans or permanent residents will be subsidised, giving them more incentive to hire locals.
The $3.2 million, set aside by the Workforce Development Agency and the Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), is expected to help recruit about 560 local drivers.
This was announced yesterday at a job fair for bus drivers organised jointly by the National Transport Workers' Union (NTWU), e2i and the two transport operators. The funding is a result of the operators' training programmes being brought under the $600 million Skills Programme for Upgrading and Resilience or Spur. The scheme aims to cut employers' costs and help workers stay employable by subsidising their training. Spur now covers more than 800 courses.
New bus drivers undergo a month's training before they take to the road. Besides receiving subsidies, the operators will also ramp up recruitment efforts in the next six months by holding job fairs with NTWU and e2i. SBS Transit executive director Gan Juay Kiat hoped more Singaporeans will see that driving a bus is a rewarding job.
YAR! PLEASE TOTALLY DO HIRE LOCAL DRIVERS. AND SINGAPOREANS OUT THERE WITHOUT A JOB, PLEASE GO BE A DRIVER. I TOTALLY BEG YOU. THE TIONG KOK PPLE ARE OWNING THE COMPANY and half the time i ask them 'does this bus go to ____?' the answer will definitely be a 'wo bu dong ni zai shuo shen me.'(cause dunno english) then i translate. the answer will still be a 'wo bu dong ni zai shuo shen me.'(cause only know how to drive but dont know where they drive past. -.- and like some old ppl need them to drive closer to the stop for them to alight (cause their legs cant stretch too much thus not able to reach the curb) then once again, i have to translate. from ang moh/hokkien/some language which i guessed the meaning correctly to my half broken chinese.) sorry, not that i'm against tiong kok ppl, but these drivers... seriously, i prefer locals who can meet our needs. X) some times, i miss the indian accented 'hello, good day!'greetings when i board the bus. so smile and appreciate the drivers whenever you board the buses, maybe, then will they go an extra mile in the service they provide.

i have a gut feeling that ppl come here only when they have really nothing better to do. thus, i shall let this blog be some wordy blog since ppl dont come here for FUN.
MENTAL PROBLEMS ON THE RISE!!!!
IMH to better track outpatients
By Lee Hui Chieh
THE national mental health hospital is looking at how it can better track and care for its outpatients, especially those more prone to violence. The Institute of Mental Health (IMH) has set up a committee to study this, after a former patient allegedly torched Member of Parliament Seng Han Thong. Questions about how IMH's more than 30,000 outpatients are monitored surfaced after 70-year-old Ong Kah Chua, who has been in and out of the hospital with a history of paranoid delusion, allegedly set the MP for Yio Chu Kang on fire at a community event in January.
Girl stabbed, mum charged
MOTHER was charged in court yesterday with killing her 14-year-old daughter.
Goh Hai Eng, 51, is said to have stabbed Eunice Chew Li Xin in their flat in Block 852, Woodlands Street 83, early yesterday morning. The teenager was found dead in her room with a stab wound in her torso just after 3am, said police. Neighbours say that the one-room rented flat on the fifth floor was also home to Goh's other daughter, believed to be in her 20s to 30s, and that daughter's baby girl, who is about a year old. The family is believed to have lived there for about a year. A neighbour on the same floor, Madam Noor Asiah, 48, said she used to meet Eunice in the lift every morning when she was sending her young daughter off to school.
'She didn't say much, except 'morning',' said the sales consultant.
Eunice, who was in Peicai Secondary School, was described by her classmate Ng Chiaqi, 16, as well-liked, and rather guai, meaning 'obedient'. The dead girl, who was in the Normal (Technical) class, played the guzheng, a traditional Chinese musical instrument, as her co-curricular activity, and had wanted to join the school choir. Schools are now closed for a one-week break.
Woman neglected her child
By Elena Chong
A WOMAN left her two-year-old son in a pram at a taxi stand outside Tiong Bahru Plaza, a court heard on Friday. The 32-year-old housewife, originally charged with child abandonment, admitted to a reduced charge of wilfully neglecting the child in circumstances that were likely to endanger his safety on Sept 11 last year. Assistant Public Prosecutor Thiagesh Sukumaran said that a security officer at the shopping centre was alerted to the toddler left unattended in a baby pram at about 11.15am that day. Closed-circuit television footage showed the accused pushing the pram from Beo Crescent to the zebra crossing opposite Tiong Bahru Plaza.
The accused was seen kissing the child before walking towards Beo Crescent, leaving him alone and unattended in the pram. The accused showed up at a police station that evening and was arrested. Her lawyer, Mr Noor Marican, said his client left her child because of marital problems. She had no intention of permanently abandoning her child and did it to get the attention of her husband, he said. Mr Marican told the court that his client realised that what she had done was wrong and was undergoing counselling. He asked the court to call for a probation report so that the child's interests were also protected. Community Court judge May Mesenas called for a pre-sentence report on April 21. She also told the prosecution to check with the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports on the welfare of the child. The penalty for child neglect is a fine of up to $4,000 and/or a jail term of up to four years.

Wen talks nuke with N.Korea 10 min-->
BEIJING - THE prime ministers of China and North Korea on Wednesday discussed the nuclear situation on the Korean peninsula as they met amid rising tensions over Pyongyang's atomic and missile programmes.
'China is willing to actively push forward the six-party talks and continue to play a constructive role in realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula,' China's Wen Jiabao told Kim Yong-Il in talks broadcast on state television.
Mr Kim's visit comes amid mounting international concern over North Korea's planned launch early next month of a communications satellite, which the United States and South Korea have said is more likely a test of a ballistic missile.
Adding to tensions, six-nation talks aimed at ending Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programmes have stalled since December.
China has expressed concern over the situation on the Korean peninsula.
'At present, the situation on the Korean peninsula is rather complicated with an increasing number of uncertain factors,' foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang told reporters on Tuesday.'We express concern over this.'
In Washington, also on Tuesday, a US general warned that the United States would have no trouble shooting down the North Korean rocket if it considered it to be a ballistic missile fired at America.
'If we felt the North Koreans were going to shoot a ballistic missile at us today, I am comfortable that we would have an effective system that would meet that need,' Air Force General Victor 'Gene' Renuart told a congressional hearing.
Washington says Pyongyang is testing a missile that could, in theory, reach Alaska. North Korea has resisted pressure from the United States and its allies to call off the rocket launch and warned that any attempt to shoot it down would be regarded as an act of war.
China, meanwhile, has called on all sides to exercise restraint and return to the six-nation nuclear negotiations, which also group the United States, North and South Korea, Japan and Russia. -- AFP

Lesbians raped as 'cure' 10 min-->
JOHANNESBURG - SOUTH African lesbians are suffering rapes by men trying to 'cure' their homosexuality, in what is becoming one of the most common hate crimes against gay women in the country, according to a new study.
The study by the anti-poverty group ActionAid said that women living in townships in Johannesburg and Cape Town were reporting increasing attacks and murders by men committing so-called 'corrective' rape.
South African women generally face a staggering risk of rape in a country with one of the highest crime rates in the world said a report on Monday.
Almost half of South African women will be raped in their lifetime, according to the report.
It said 500,000 rapes were committed each year. Of every 25 men brought to trial for rape, only one is convicted.
But lesbians are being singled out by men who think that the rape will change their sexual orientation, said the head of ActionAid South Africam, Zanele Twala.
'So-called 'corrective' rape is yet another grotesque manifestation of violence against women, the most widespread human rights violation in the world today,' she said.
One support group in Cape Town said it is responding to 10 new cases of 'corrective' rape every week, in that city alone, the report said.
South Africa's constitution enshrines equal rights for gay people, but hate crimes based on sexual orientation are not recognised by law or in courts, the study said.
At least 31 lesbians have been killed in homophobic attacks over the last decade, but only one case has led to a conviction, it said, warning the real number of killings is likely much higher in a country where 50 people meet a violent death every day. -- AFP
conclusion: very open woman in a very conservative country.

New panel to reward NSmen 10 min-->
By Jermyn Chow
NSMEN can expect more goodies with the setting up of a fifth committee to look into how to better reward them for service to the nation.
The latest committee, called the Recognise the Contribution of Operationally Ready NSmen to Total Defence or Record V, will come up with a package of recommendations, such as cash incentives and recreational benefits, for NSmen.
Recordconvenes once every four or five years.
The new panel is chaired by Minister of State for Defence Associate Professor Koo Tsai Kee.
The 20-member committee met at the Safra's Mount Faber clubhouse on Thursday.
Members include three MPs - Ms Indranee Rajah (Tanjong Pagar GRC), Mr Christopher de Souza (Holland-Bukit Timah GRC) and Mr Zaqy Bin Mohamad (Hong Kah GRC) - NSmen, their spouses and employers.
There are two members representing the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
Incentives aside, the panel seeks to involve all Singaporeans in defending Singapore, a concept known as Total Defence.
It will also look into ways to preserve the camaraderie and bonds that are built up among soldiers during NS.
The first Record committee was created in 1990. Its recommendations led to a preferential income tax relief system for NSmen, the extension of their passport validity for easier overseas travel and revisions to the allowance for those who hold key positions.
Subsequent committees set up in 1995, 2000 and 2005 called for higher monetary awards for those who have scored well in marksmanship, leadership and performance during national service to be recognised for university admission.
good huh? (to ny stds: i bet ah han is complaining.)

A 14-YEAR-OLD student was found dead with a stab wound in her torso in a one-room flat in Woodlands early on Thursday.
The victim is identified as Eunice Chew Li Xin, of Pei Cai Secondary School.
Police were alerted to the murder at Block 852 Woodlands Street 83 at around 2.50 am.
The Chinese teenager was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene at around 3.06am.
A 51-year-old woman, believed to be the girl's mother and said to be mentally unsound, has been arrested.
Police have classified the case as murder, and will charge the suspect in court on Friday.
Neighbours said the girl lived with her mother and a married sister, who has a baby, in the fifth-floor HDB rental flat.
A team of five officials from the Health Sciences Authority went to the flat on Thursday afternoon and took away a bagful of the teenager's clothes at about 3 pm.
Neighbours said they heard sound of breaking glass and arguments from the flat at about 2 am. A neighbour, who gave his name only as Mr Ang, said he was woken up from his sleep by the commotion and he also heard luggage bag being rolled along the common corridor.
Residents said the woman suspect looked troubled and was often seen staring blankly into space.

8:41 PM
i'm sorry. i really dont know how to start this. but i think there is a need to say this at the start. just to be fair to all.
(those who are doing nyaa gold should pay more attention. it's considered under the SL part.)
HAIX. For the ct-sl right, though some ppl say they are interested, but all are waiting for us to plan. so, the initial ppl consisting of andrel yangfan and i, decided to apply for YMCA-citibank youth for causes ( a kind of SL too).
kk. pardon me for my disorganised explaination. and
sometimes i may make no sense. so do clarify if needed. SORRY!
*
we actually wanted to go for that right at the start, but we were putting CT into consideration, so we gave up the idea of applying for that, and initiate a CT SL. however, since no one responded to the active planning/ generation of ideas for the SL, and after the free workshop by the organisation, our passion for that rekindled. at this point of time, we may sound that we have given up on the CT. BUT, we aint so mean. after much consideration here are a few proposal.
1. a.
three of us will continue with the ymca idea, and WE NEED ONE MORE EXECUTIVE MEMBER. (four in a grp). HOWEVER, for this project, we need other planning members, like we are the overall in charge, then a group of leaders/ people-in-charge, then a group of volunteers. so you guys can be the people in-charge. LOST? think of it like a company. the exco, (the four of us), then you ppl as the commitee members, then volunteers whom we will recruit as workers. and yepp, you guys will given more CIP hours than those volunteers cause you ppl will be involved in work behind the scenes.
1.b
but, this is just a plan A. cause we have to sumbit a proposal first, and then be chosen to execute it.
so if we werent chosen, we will still continue to execute the sl project, as a CT, but at a smaller scale or we seek other source of sponsor. ( YMCA will sponsor 1600 bucks if chosen, and an addition of 3000 bucks from another oganisation if we ask for it. ---from the amount you can actually deduce that this project is more recognised in portfolio than ct sl, AND YOU GUYS ARE (if you join) ACTUALLY THE COMMITTEE OF THIS WONDERFUL MEANINGFUL PROJECT!! hence a better choice.)
2.
we continue with our ymca citibank youth for causes project. we find our own commitee, and you guys ( oh, when i say guys, i mean people. as in girls AND guys. i'm used to calling ppl guys, so yar. didnt realise that till mass convo when only guys reply and girls kept quiet. didnt happen in mass convo back then when i was in nanyang. =.= ) can initiate another CT SL on your own. i dont mind joining in too, but not sure if the other two will join.
so, yepp. kinda long-winded. hope you ppl dont mind.
PLEASE VOICE YOUR OPINION! and in both cases, ymca citibank proposal will still be submitted. hence, we are recruiting another member. anyone interested, please email me. we need someone who are good at presentation, in other words, public relationship. >.<
*sweating...
kk. once again, SORRY! if anyone are pissed off that we came out with such a decision, and think that we pang seh you guys. sorry! we really didnt, our minds almost burst think how we should bring this message across that we do what we like and yet benefits the class. SL are impt! not for your portfolio, but experiences you will treasure and love after stepping into adulthood and the workforce! >.<
gosh. shall end this.
_end.
(POINT TO NOTE:
we: andrel yangfan and xinyan; i: xinyan)
there are a few fun ideas, which we have yet to confirm.
for assurance, by my name, i'll make sure that CIPs are fun and meaningful. :)
先小人后君子。
but if you really dont have a heart to care for others, i would rather you not to be involved.

i took a 'how nosy are you' test today.
here's the results:
You may seem to be a nosy person to some people, but actually you are quite a serious person who's not at all interested in gossip. You just like to know what's going on around you. It's a natural interest and you can get offended when people tell you they think you're a sticky-beak.
WAHAHA. I PROOVED SOMEONE(some of you know who right?) WRONG. gender inequality is (virtually) justified in this instant. XD wahahah.

Hi, guys.
It's my first time to post here. I don't feel like studying now, so just come here and play around.
Well, I shall share two videos which I love a lot. Hope you will enjoy as well.
The first one is World Builder. It's touching and heartwarming. After viewing it, I feel that human's relationship and tender emotions are the only things which will stay true and not be duplicated in the world. We shall cherish our loved ones when they are around. It would be too late when the day which we have to rely on the illusions created by high tech comes.
The second one is Jason Mraz singing Life is Wonderful. I like the melody and the lyrics of this song as well as the way Mraz expressed it. Mraz's songs are sweet and nice. Enjoy!
Yup, that's all. Enjoy the holidays and see you at STJ. :)

HELLO ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
despite the conflict of interest between soccer and the class; despite the lagging of some computers; despite the spamming by some super high people who write in CAPS, we have successfully held our very first mass convo online that lasted for one and a half hour. some went off earlier, passing the baton to others, but we are glad to say that many have found joy being involved in such non-progressive discussion.
you can refer to the last post for our class outing suggestion. and please do comment cause our dear activity rep is so busy, he (most probably with the help of his good old brother) has to plan ahead. so we have to choose one of the ideas asap.
the post below lack details. ytd in the midst of confusion, we agreed that movie has no interaction, hence should be shot down. kbox, only those who like to sing or dare to sing will b engaged while the rest will blend into the sofa. some say that escape or wildwildwet is a scam. (personally agrees. and it's the last place i would ever go for a cg outing.) anyway, afew individuals do not want bowling(very expensive lehh) and iceskating(though many still support this idea). we have left with only pool and beach outing. so the choice is up to you.
oh and other than the good old brother, we will be celebrating the other 3 march babies. but how are gonna celebrate it? we havent decide. it's quite weird if we bake a cake at lewis's house and give it to him. right? we need to have another round of GI.
digress abit.
i've concluded that amanda is still as loud in msn. ryn is childish. honghui has no life and actually talk more in msn than real life. haha. kk. we have on task ppl like zheng yang. and sometimes yinghui.
that's all folks.
